Did you know that the #1 fear of most people is public speaking? All social phobias, regardless of which they are, begin in childhood! The debate team was created to help develop our students’ (Speech Masters) confidence by teaching them various communication and leadership strategies. We enhance student’s oral and written communication skills while expanding their vocabulary, articulation, and problem-solving abilities. Students learn how to collaborate and disagree in respectful and productive ways and present feedback and positive reinforcement to their classmates. A program like ours is one that many adults wished existed when they were in school. The skills they acquire such as learning to advocate for themselves and others is in part why our I.S. 68’s Debate Team is “Where tomorrow’s leaders are speaking today!”

At IS 68, Eco students serve as advocates for sustainable practices by participating in real world projects which involve recycling and repurposing plastics and fabrics, maintaining vegetable and pollinating gardens on school grounds and caring for air purifying plants in classrooms building wide. Our students lead by example in educating others about caring for the environment.
Eco is held during school hours, and in the spring there will be an afterschool program as well.
